The New York Times recently posted details on a group of 12 exercises that, when performed in rapid succession and with minimal rest in between sets, can mimic the health-improving effects of a long run and hitting the weight room. Even better, the workout requires no equipment other than a chair and can be completed in just 7 minutes.
The appeal is obvious – getting the maximum benefit to your health with only a minimum of effort.
Which got me thinking… what are the activities website managers can do in seven minutes that can greatly enhance productivity and the health of their websites?
Here’s my list, although it is far from complete:
- Talk with your users
One quick email or phone call per day asking your users how they are using your website can offer significant insights that your analytics will never reveal. Another added benefit is that you’ll create a human connection with your users that can lead to increased loyalty. - Get to know your Analytics
Knowledge is power. Be an analytics ninja! Learn one new trick that applies to your business per week. Here’s a list of resources to get you started. - Talk to your coworkers
I do mean talk to them. Don’t send them an email. Don’t IM them. Don’t even use the phone. Get up from the computer and have a face-to-face conversation. I’ve wasted too much time trying to interpret vague emails or IMs. A 2-minute conversation can save you endless headaches later. - Use your own website
This seems like a no-brainer, but I’ve worked with several people who did not use their own website. You have to eat your own dog food!
